A few weeks ago there was news of US soldiers burning the dead in front of Afghanis to make a point. The act was covered world-wide. But it got barely a whisper in the US. Even the liberal blogs passed over the story quickly. Some at Kos were pissed off when I posted photos of the shameful act, with
one person even asking: "Why do people need to see this?"
I was listening to conservative radio earlier today. The topic: How far should the US go with its war prisoners? It was a radio call-in show about torture. People called in with suggestions for drugging prisoners, for torturing them, for doing whatever. It was totally disgusting, and some callers actually voiced that view (military folks were the most upset).
And now there is more news about use of chemical weapons by the US in Fallujah.
All news in the US should stop and focus this story. Bloggers should write of nothing else. Not Plamegate, not Alito, not the gains for Dems in the elections matter more than this news.

The use of chemical weapons is amongst most shameful thing that our government could do in our names. For many of us in the pro-peace movement we have already been shocked by this news. We knew that Fullajah was a scene of many horrendous crimes against humanity. Hospitals were bombed as targets early in the raid. Homes with children and families were fire bombed. Air strikes killed the innocent.
But even if we, the small minority who were always opposed to this war and always knew that Bush was lying about his reasons for going to war, already knew about the shameful events in Fullajah most Americans still don't. And I suspect that this story will prove to go unnoticed as did other stories of the war.
I am brought to tears when I think what has become of America. For torture, chemical warfare, crimes against the peace, wars of aggression and other horrendous acts to become possible is insane. For these to enter into political debate as mere possibilities, as considerations, is simply barbaric. I am horrified and angry, ashamed and disappointed.
